America's most under-recognized community for its agricultural history and athletic dominance. The Muck City project focuses on bringing locals and outsiders together; to reflect, preserve and recognize the magnitude of history and success from an area that has played such an intricate part of America's pastime and favorite sport. Whether born and raised in The Muck or learning about it for the first time, it’s a story that needs to be told, heard and shared!
MUCK CITY PROJECT

OUR COMMUNITY, OUR STORY
WE'RE IN...ARE YOU?
HISTORY
The existence of Muck City dates back to the early 1900's related to the federal project of draining the land around Lake Okeechobee, the acreage known for its rich quality and quantity of loamy black muck soil. This region of Florida produces some of the richest soil on earth, having produced over 75% of the United States sugar supply and many other crops used by the American people throughout history. The history of the muck not only lies in its soil and agriculture, but in its people, which is a major part of American history...
THE GLADES COMMUNITY
A community better known as “Muck City” due to the large quantity of muck like soil is made up of four cities bordering the Southern tip of Lake Okeechobee; Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay & Clewiston. These cities are predominantly made up of agricultural producing businesses which produces about half the sugarcane in the nation grown in the plains around The Muck. Despite being in the South Florida region of the state; the glades is culturally more associated with the Florida heartland. Having been around since the early 1900’s the existence of The Muck is related to the federal project of draining the land around Lake Okeechobee, the acreage to be used for agriculture. The area around Lake Okeechobee is fertile and farming has been the leading producer of income and employment since the beginning of time for this area. The community has been through one of the most devastating hurricanes in history in 1925 and was witness to one of the last communities of slavery in the US, but that has not stopped nor hindered the locals from continuing to find a way to persevere.
